AC4 Partners with Scensei for Report on the Basque Civil Society Group Gure Esku Dago
AC4’s Kristen Rucki, together with Armando Geller, D.Phil from the design analytics and decision support boutique Scensei, spent May 14-18 conducting fieldwork in the Basque Country. They conducted interviews for a research initiative exploring self-determination as a democratic process in the Basque Country and the role of the civil society organization Gure Esku Dago. The project was designed jointly by Dr. Geller, Ms. Rucki, and AC4 Director Josh Fisher, Ph.D.
Over the course of four days, the research team visited every province of the Basque Country, including the major cities of Bilbao, Donostia, and Gasteiz and the municipality of Idiazabal. They also traveled to the city of Iruñea (Pamplona) in the region of Navarre and to the Iparralde area of France. They conducted interviews with participants in Gure Esku Dago, academics, and representatives from various other sectors to learn more about their perceptions of self-determination, how it can be exercised, and the role of Gure Esku Dago in influencing public opinion across the region.
The study will culminate in a report to be released later this year, and the research team from AC4 and Scensei is expected to return to the Basque Country to discuss their findings in September 2015. In July 2015, Dr. Fisher will also discuss Basque public opinion around the right to decide at a seminar held as part of the Basque Jaialdia celebration in Boise, Idaho.
