The urgency of the climate crisis requires that we quickly decarbonize the global economy. However, where and how we harvest critical minerals like lithium can undermine water security and ecosystem integrity. Understanding the hydrological connectivity of arid alpine systems is critical for sustainably managing those resources, but there are crucial knowledge and data gaps in many of these areas. Our new paper, led by Brendan J. Moran and co-authored David Boutt, and Lee Ann Munk, provides important new understanding of the dominant controls on natural water cycles intrinsic to these arid high-elevation systems that will improve our ability to manage critical water resources.
